About the Author
Bona Malwal is editor-in-chief of the Sudan Times, the English-language daily newspaper of Khartoum, and is the author of two books: People and Power and Sudan: A Second Challenge to Nationhood. A former member of Parliament and minister of information and culture in the central government, he has also served in the southern regional government as minister of industry and minister of finance. Mr. Malwal was jailed for a year by the military dictatorship of General Jaafar Mohamed Nimeiri, and was also threatened with arrest under the government of Prime Minister Sadiq El Mahdi. He was out of the country when El Mahdi was overthrown in a coup in June 1989, and has remained abroad, where he continues to speak and write extensively on the issues facing democracy in his native land.
