About the Author
Gustavo Gorriti is a Peruvian journalist and author. The first volume of his three-volume history of the Shining Path insurgency, Sendero: Historia de la Guerra Milenaria en el Perú, has recently been published in Lima. An earlier version of this article was prepared for the Inter-American Dialogue’s Workshop on Democracy and Violence held in Miami on 14 June 1990.
