Muthiah Alagappa, a native of Malaysia, is a senior fellow at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Previously a visiting professor in the East Asian Institute and the political science department at Columbia University and a senior fellow at the Institute for Strategic and International Studies in Malaysia, he is the editor of Political Legitimacy in Southeast Asia.
