About the Author

Rachel M. McCleary, a consultant on political and economic issues in Central America, holds a doctorate from the University of Chicago and has taught at Georgetown and Princeton universities. In 1994, she conducted research in Guatemala as a Fulbright research grantee, and has written numerous articles on contemporary politics in that country.
